Not every computer user turns there attic or garage into a graveyard for outdated electronics such as PCs.
Before you don the goggles and break out the power tools, think about whether there isnt some mileage left in that hard drive, as well as in the PC you removed it from. It is easier than never before to find a nonprofit willing to wipe and refurbish old desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.
However, if the system has indeed chomped its last bit, there are plenty of organizations that will ensure that it is disposed of responsibly, including the devices original vendor, in many cases.
Can you donate that old computer?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys eCycling site lists information on finding a multiple electronics-donation centers and provides convenient links to the donation and recycling programs offered by manufacturers and government agencies. Keep PC toxins out of the environment
If that old PC has truly reached the end of the road, dont toss it in the garbage or dump it in a landfill. Some of the components of electronics use toxic chemicals that can leech into the environment. Improper disposal of electronics equipment is even illegal in some states including California.
The TV news magazine 60 Minutes ran a special segment on toxins in electronics equipment that are finding their way into the land, watersheds, and back to us. Much of the toxic residue ends up in dumps overseas.
We may only officially celebrate Earth Day on April 22 , but every day can be Earth Day if you make a conscience decision to donate or recycle your electronics equipment responsible.
