*Job Purpose:*


A Peer Support Service is a structured and scheduled therapeutic activity with an individual client or group provided by a trained, self-identified consumer of mental health services. A Peer Support Specialist guides clients toward the identification and achievement of specific goals defined by the client and specified in the Individual Treatment Plan.




*Job Description:*




* Provides safe, effective and evidenced based mental health care that can be defined and measured via Peer Support Services. Will serve as an active member of the client’s treatment team; advocate for services request by the client; cultivate the client’s ability to make informed, independent choices, to set goals, and assist the client in gaining information and support from the community. Will plan activities with the client that lead to improved self-concepts through empowerment and self-determination opportunities; teach and model the importance of medication monitoring, effective communication with doctors and other caregivers; assist the client in developing a WRAP plan, Psychiatric Advance Directive, and/or crisis plan to facilitate or avoid/shorten hospitalization; assist the consumer with learning how to maintain stable housing and employment; provide support and encouragement to both the client and their family members, when it is the choice of the client to do so. Will offer clients hope of recovery from mental illness by sharing their own recovery stories and by teaching clients how to tell their own recovery stories effectively. Will use their unique recovery experience to model the value of every individual’s recovery experience and to teach effective coping techniques and self-help strategies. Will help the client navigate the mental health system; help identify and link client with needed services to meet needs via provision of case-management; includes productivity requirement. This includes assisting with Wellness Recovery Action Plans and facilitation of NAMI groups with local chapter.



* Documentation of services provided meeting state/federal/agency guidelines.



* Participation in treatment team and clinical staff meetings.



* Facilitation of recovery Presentations and Advocacy Events.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:
Experience in a relevant program area.
Preferred Qualifications:

**_Agency Requirements:_High School Diploma or GED equivalent and be a current or former consumer of mental health services; plus have one (1) year participation in local or national consumer movement or demonstrative recovery expertise. **
