The Director, Foundation Relations will play a critical role in achieving our strategic goals by working closely with the leadership team, program staff, and key supporters to raise the funds we need to implement and grow our programs around the world. S/he will be responsible for managing a portfolio of high value donors and prospective donors, and will play a critical role in working with the Senior Director and the SVP, Growth and Strategy to plan creative approaches to increasing Rare’s foundations support. The Director will carry a multi-million dollar goal and will work in close collaboration with the CEO, COO, and regional leadership to cultivate and steward the foundation relationships. 
 
Rare is developing a business plan that will require approximately $150 million over five years and executing a $40 million challenge grant. The Director will build key relationships with new and existing foundations. S/he will engage with program officers, program directors, Presidents and board members through in-person meetings and site visits. To be successful, s/he will need to engage program staff and Rare leadership.
 
The Director should be capable of inspiring support from a variety of donors ranging from dedicated conservationists to venture philanthropists. This role reports to the Senior Director of Foundation Relations and works closely with the CEO, the SVP, Growth and Strategy, the VP of Fish Forever, as well as senior management and program staff. 

Essential Functions

Manage a portfolio of high-potential donors and prospects focusing primarily on $1M+ gifts.
Work closely with fundraising team and Rare leadership to design and implement strategies to meet multimillion-dollar annual and long-term fundraising goals.
Partner with Senior Director, Foundation Relations to co-develop a strategic plan to significantly increase Rare’s portfolio of foundation partners across next five years.
Write and edit proposals, grant reports and other donor communications.
Ensure that every major foundation in his/her portfolio has a clear strategy and timeline for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
Communicate effectively with donors through extensive in-person stewardship and strategy meetings, as well as on-going tactical written and verbal (phone/webinar, etc.) strategies
Design and implement creative and cutting-edge donor forums and international donor trips.
Provide weekly and monthly revenue forecasts, reports, and analysis to senior management
Effectively manage and track donor cultivation activities in Salesforce.
Surface and implement best practices in fundraising to improve Rare’s effectiveness.

Required Experience and Education
At least seven years of demonstrated nonprofit fundraising success, particularly with institutional foundations and a proven track record in:

Successfully acquiring $1M+ grants
Managing a portfolio of multiple donors and programs
Developing and stewarding key relationships within foundations
Synthesizing complex information into a compelling value proposition
Developing creative, highly-focused fundraising strategies
Partnering with program staff to develop successful proposals, stewardship plans, and donor events
Strong sense of fundraising ethics and respect for confidentiality of donor information.
Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Willingness to participate in national and international travel as needed for training and/or to support fundraising goals.
Results-orientation, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within budget and deadlines.
Familiarity with global conservation and/or human development issues, opportunities and donors.
Experience co-developing program strategies with donors a plus
Experience in joint fundraising and with other organizations a plus.
Strong computer skills are required; knowledge of Salesforce database is preferred.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
