I am offering several nautical items from the estate of Captain A.M. Savage USN. The major item is a high quality model of the USS Whippoorwill MSC-207. There is also two boat cigarette lighters and a Korean plaque awarded to Savage.

Capt. Savage was the grandson of Arthur Savage who was the founder of the prolific Savage Arms Company. During the mid-1960s he was the Commander of Mine Flotilla Force, 7th Fleet based in Sasebo Japan. During this period he was the senior officer stationed aboard the USS Epping Forest (MCS-7) and was well known for trap shooting off a helicopter pad while in port. There were a number of Minesweepers in his flotilla with one standout, which was the USS Whippoorwill (MSC-207). He was so proud of this vessel he had a very detailed 1:100 model built along with a teak/glass display case. The Captain insisted that the model be made with the same non-magnetic materials used in the actual boat where possible. The model is difficult to date, but the mid-1960s seems likely based on the Flotilla’s duties during that era and the Battle Efficiency Award “E” (with hash mark) painted on both sides of the superstructure. The Whippoorwill was the pride of the Pacific Mine Force and had an illustrious 21 year service with the U.S. Navy. She was built in 1954 at Bellingham WA and deactivated in 1975 at Vallejo CA, then sold to the Republic of Singapore where she was commissioned as the RSS Jupiter (M-102).

The other items are a plaque presented to “CAPT. A.M. SAVAGE” in 1964 by the Commander of Korea Fleet #31 plus two Zippo type Japanese lighters built by the Prince Mfg. Co. The 1st lighter is signed (Front) “PRESENTED BY COMMANDING OFFICER” Shield = “USS WHIPPPOOWILL MSC-207” “207” “SAFE IN OUR WAKE” (Back) “U.S.S. WHIPPEOORWILL MCS-207” and the 2nd lighter (Front) Shield = “MINE FOLTILLA ONE” (Back) “Am Savage” “COMMANDER MINE FORCE ONE”. Both are unused, in the original boxes, plus the “Savage” lighter is still in its plastic wrapping.

The Whippoorwill model measures 16”L x 3”W x 8”T, and the case is 23”L x 7½”W x 12”T. Together they weigh 12½ pounds and when combined with the lighters and plaque the total weight is 16 pounds. I am listing these fragile items as “Pickup Only”, but would be willing to help with the packing and shipping arrangements. The model’s condition looks absolutely perfect, but I am not a boat model expert. The case is not high quality but looks nice and holds the model securely. One of the large glass panels has a small corner missing and the wood has some warpage.

I have enjoyed these collectibles for 13 years but need to downsize currently. The items offered are a rare one of a kind group of nautical artifacts, especially when considering the Whippoorwill’s noteworthy service and Captain Savage’s flamboyant style combined with the Savage family history.
