Guitarist Bill Frisell, a constant explorer of American roots traditions, was the recipient of the first FreshGrass Commission, given yearly to an artist whose work reflects the FreshGrass mission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. FreshGrass defines Roots Music Commissions as a broad collection of musical styles that includes bluegrass, folk, old-time, Americana, blues, jazz and world music, as well as classical music if there is an importance on traditional songs.
