Description

The saxophone in particular was listed as serial number 3294.

Rudy (Rudolph Cornelius) Wiedoeft was one of the most popular musicians of the late teen’s and 1920’s throughout the USA and Europe. Perhaps he, more than any other musician of that period made the saxophone one of the most popular musical instruments. Rudy Wiedoeft was enormously popular as a performer, as a composer , and as the author of a very successful series of instruction books. His most popular piece of music, Saxophobia, is still published and is the largest selling piece of saxophone music ever published.

It is impossible today to fully appreciate just how popular, and important, Wiedoeft was in the 1920’s – he was at the same time praised for his artistry, and blamed for creating the saxophone craze. Rudy Wiedoeft met Henri Selmer during one of his European tours in 1925, and they became close friends. Rudy Wiedoeft soon selected the Selmer Model 22 as his saxophone of choice. Shown in the May 1, 1926 edition of Metronome magazine is an advertisement from Selmer USA showing Rudy Wiedoeft purchasing a Selmer Model 22 C-Melody saxophone with optional factory gold plating and special factory engraving. The saxophone in particular was listed as serial number 3294.

This auction is for the same Selmer Paris Model 22 C-Melody Saxophone, serial number 3294 which was the saxophone featured in the above advertisement, which was obviously the personal property of Rudy Wiedoeft. Rudy Wiedoeft's 1926 sheet music also seems to feature the same saxophone, or at the very least another Selmer saxophone.

Additionally, Rudy Wiedoeft discretely had his initials “RW” engraved onto the bell, somewhat hidden behind two small flowers. Please see the enclosed photographs which show this saxophone with it’s beautiful engraving and resplendent gold plating.

This saxophone is in playable condition and has that lush, warm tone that made it the saxophone of choice for many saxophone professionals. I invite you to please take a few moments and listen to some of the great performances by Rudy Wiedoeft and several modern saxophonists showcasing the C-Melody sax on Youtube.

Many consider the Model 22 saxophone the key instrument in Selmer Paris’ growth to become the premiere saxophone manufacturer of the 20 century. From 1900 to 1924 Selmer produced a total of 2,350 saxophones, during the next 5 years, very possibly due to Rudy Wiedoeft’s involvement and Selmer’s quality product, sales rose to nearly 12,000 saxophones.
